Big Country Kennels is a breeders of top quality German Shorthaired Pointers and Bernese Mountain Dogs located in rural Niagara just outside the wine bench of Niagara, approximately 20 minutes from Niagara Falls, Ontario. They have 20 acres of farmland and bush with a large private pond and a secure 1 acre playground just for the dogs.

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is a large and heavy boned dog with incredible physical strength. Historically, the Swissy was bred as a draft dog to pull heavy carts, as a herding dog to move dairy cattle, and as a watchdog and family companion. The Swiss farmer needed a strong, multi- purpose dog capable of contributing to daily life on the farm. The Swissy is a very alert, strong and athletic dog who can out power most breeds of dog. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is confident in nature and should never be shy and though athletic and very physical, the Swissy is also known to be very gentle with young children.

Big Country Kennels are committed to producing quality puppies with excellent temperaments, health and conformation. They will always continue to strive for dogs that will provide the best results in the field or in the show ring, but most importantly as loving family companions.

Temperament as well as health are our primary concerns and we only breed dogs with full health clearances. BCR do a number of health checks on our dogs before breeding, including Hip & Elbow x-rays (OFA or OVC), Board Certified Eye Exams (CERF), as well as Board Certified Cardiac Exams (OFA). Some of our dogs may also have further testing on Thyroid, Cone Degeneration and DNA tests for von Willebrand’s Disease.
